Having been captured by the radiant beauty of Him Who is the “fairest among the children on men” and having offered their lives to him in a complete oblation; the life, worship, prayer, and works of the Oblates of the Heart of Mary are marked by the via pulchritudinis – the way of beauty.

By spending time and loving attention on the God Who is Beauty in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and Eucharistic adoration, the Sisters receive the grace to grow in the interior beauty of holiness. From this treasure of grace and beauty, the Sisters strive to offer beauty back to God first in their hearts. Flowing out from this is beauty in the chapel and its appointments, the music offered during the divine worship, the manner of attending Holy Mass, the care for the habit and the convent, the simplicity and order of their classrooms and offices, and in all the aspects of their lives. These exterior aspects of beauty are first an offering to God but also a means to union with Him for each Sister and those with whom she interacts.

While acknowledging the goodness and importance of exterior beauty, the Sisters will remember that the deepest and most profound Beauty is just as present in the Crucified King on Calvary as it is in the most triumphant and glorious liturgy. In fact, this is the source of the liturgy’s beauty. Thus, in union with Our Lady at the foot of the Cross, the Sisters will remember that via pulchritudinis is intimately tied to the via crucis.

As loving children of Mary called to be with her on Calvary, the Sisters will look to her – illa quae tota pulchra est (she who is all beautiful) – as their guide on the via pulchritudinis. They will entrust their hearts, prayers, apostolates, and daily duties to her, so that she may clothe them with the beauty of her virtues and present them to her Divine Son.
